Food Pantry

During this economic downturn, families are turning to the Salvation Army in record numbers. Right now we are serving almost 1100 people a month in our food pantry.  We are helping twice as many people as we were 2 years ago.  (And then, we were surprised by how many people were coming for food!)

Our food pantry continues to run on the kindness of friends and strangers.  While every food donation is important and helpful, I would like to highlight a few.

First is the Glendale Kiwanis Club.  Every quarter, the club buys 4000 lbs of bulk-packed beans and rice.  Then 30 or more happy Kiwanians show up on a Saturday morning and repack the beans and rice into smaller packages for us to give away.

The second angel is the GUSD PTSA. Special thanks to the current President Elizabeth Manasserian for organizing everything! And thanks to the PTSA’s from Fremont, Verdugo Woodlands, College View, Mark Keppel, Columbus, Glenoaks, Franklin & Thomas Jefferson Elementary  Schools; Toll & Wilson Middle Schools; and Glendale High School for helping fill our pantry.

Third are the local Glendale churches. There are several that bring us food on an on-going basis. Those that came at just the right moment for us last month were Salem Lutheran Church and Unity Church of the Valley.

Fourthly, I want to thank the National Association of Letter Carriers for making us the local beneficiary for their annual food drive.

And last but not least, the Boy Scouts Verdugo Hills Council and their annual Scouting for Food drive in a tremendous blessing!

We didn’t ask any of these groups for food; they just brought it when we needed it most! It’s great to be part of a community that cares. Thanks to everyone who supports our food pantry.
