FAQ

What is Safe Place?
Safe Place is where kids get help fast.  A network of locations have been set up where kids in crisis can go for immediate help.  Trained counselors then meet the youth at the Safe Place location and work together with him or her to figure out what needs to happen next to keep the youth safe.  Youth can also call our 24 hour hotline number to get the help they need.  888-641-2297

How can I recognize a Safe Place?
Safe Place sites have a bright yellow and black diamond-shaped “Safe Place” sign posted on or near the building.

What types of places are Safe Place sites?
Fast food restaurants, fire stations, libraries, the YMCA, the Salvation Army, and other businesses.

Who should use Safe Place?
Any youth in Glendale can get help at a Safe Place site or by calling the hotline number.  If you are dealing with abuse or neglect, you are lost or in some dangerous situation, you are with a drunk or unsafe driver, or you just need help, go to the nearest Safe Place site, or call the toll-free number.

What if I go to a Safe Place site that isn’t open?
Most Safe Place sites have a Safe Place sign that says, “If closed, call…” and gives you the hotline number.  The number is free from any payphone.

What happens when I go to a Safe Place site?
Just tell an employee, “I need a Safe Place.”  The employee will find a safe place for you to wait while he or she calls Safe Place.  Then Safe Place will send counselors who will come and help you.

Will I have to wait long at the Safe Place site?
Counselors should arrive within 20 minutes.

What happens when the Safe Place counselors get there?
They will listen to you and help you figure out what you should do.  They will be happy to take you to a youth shelter if you need a safe place to sleep for the night or need long-term help.

Do I have to go to a shelter if I go to a Safe Place site?
No.  The decision to go to the shelter is completely up to you.  At the shelter, no one will force you to stay.  The decision is always yours.

Will my parents or guardians be told where I am?
Yes.  The law says that Safe Place must contact your parents or guardians to let them know you are safe.  If you make allegations of abuse, child protective services will be called.

How can I help other kids and teenagers get the help they need?
If you have a friend who needs Safe Place, encourage them to call the hotline number, or offer to go with them to a Safe Place site.  If you think your friend is in danger, tell a parent, teacher, or another adult you trust.
